A breast cancer diagnosis, or the possibility of one, can be an overwhelming and uncertain time. Dr Robert George, a Specialist Soft Tissue Surgeon (MBBS MS FRACS), provides surgical care for patients throughout their breast cancer journey, working alongside oncologists and other specialists to ensure coordinated, evidence-based treatment.

Signs and symptoms to be aware of:

While regular screening remains the most reliable way to detect breast cancer early, it's also important to be aware of changes that warrant prompt assessment, including:

• A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
• Changes in breast size, shape, or symmetry
• Skin changes, such as dimpling, puckering, or redness
• Nipple changes, including inversion, discharge, or scaling
• Persistent pain in the breast or underarm not linked to a clear cause

Not all changes indicate cancer, but any new or persistent change should be assessed promptly.

Diagnosis:

If a change is identified through screening or self-examination, further investigation typically follows a structured pathway, which may include:

• Clinical examination — a physical assessment of the breast and surrounding tissue
• Imaging — mammography, ultrasound, and, where indicated, MRI
• Biopsy — sampling of breast tissue to confirm a diagnosis and gather information that guides treatment planning

Treatment approach:

Treatment for breast cancer is highly individualised and depends on factors including the type and stage of cancer, genetic and hormonal factors, and personal preference. Surgical options may include breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy, often considered alongside reconstructive options, and are planned in coordination with your broader oncology team.
