BREAST CANCER

A breast cancer diagnosis, or the possibility of one, can be an overwhelming and uncertain time. At LIFE X CLINICS, our aim is to provide clear information, expert surgical care, and genuine support at every stage of your journey, from initial investigation through to treatment and ongoing surveillance.

Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast begin to grow and divide abnormally. It is one of the most common cancers affecting women, though it can also occur in men. Outcomes are significantly improved with early detection, which is why regular screening and prompt investigation of any changes in the breast are so important.

Dr Robert George, a Specialist Soft Tissue Surgeon (MBBS MS FRACS), provides surgical care for patients throughout their breast cancer journey, working alongside oncologists and other specialists to ensure coordinated, evidence-based treatment.

Signs and symptoms to be aware of:

While regular screening remains the most reliable way to detect breast cancer early, it's also important to be aware of changes that warrant prompt assessment, including:

  • A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
  • Changes in breast size, shape, or symmetry
  • Skin changes, such as dimpling, puckering, or redness
  • Nipple changes, including inversion, discharge, or scaling
  • Persistent pain in the breast or underarm not linked to a clear cause

Not all changes indicate cancer, but any new or persistent change should be assessed promptly.

Diagnosis:

If a change is identified through screening or self-examination, further investigation typically follows a structured pathway, which may include:

  • Clinical examination — a physical assessment of the breast and surrounding tissue
  • Imaging — mammography, ultrasound, and, where indicated, MRI
  • Biopsy — sampling of breast tissue to confirm a diagnosis and gather information that guides treatment planning

Dr George will explain each step of this process clearly, helping you understand results and next steps as they become available.

Treatment approach:

Treatment for breast cancer is highly individualised and depends on factors including the type and stage of cancer, genetic and hormonal factors, and personal preference. Surgical options may include breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy, often considered alongside reconstructive options, and are planned in coordination with your broader oncology team.

Supporting you through your journey:

A breast cancer diagnosis affects far more than the physical. Dr Robert George and our clinical team, are committed to walking alongside you with clear communication, coordinated care, and compassion, from diagnosis through treatment and into long-term surveillance.

If you have concerns about a change in your breast, please contact our clinic promptly to arrange an assessment. For details on screening, surveillance, and reconstructive options, see our related pages.
