IMPLANT MONITORING AND EXCHANGE

IMPLANT MONITORING AND EXCHANGE

Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices, and ongoing monitoring is an important part of caring for your results over the years following augmentation. While many implants remain in good condition well beyond a decade, routine surveillance allows any changes to be identified early, and implant exchange or removal to be planned proactively rather than as an emergency.

At LIFE X CLINICS, Dr Robert George provides ongoing implant monitoring and, where needed, implant exchange surgery, drawing on his experience across hundreds of breast procedures to guide patients through this stage of their journey with the same care as their original surgery.

Why implant monitoring matters:

  • Detecting silent rupture, which often presents with no obvious symptoms
  • Identifying capsular contracture (hardening or tightening of scar tissue around the implant)
  • Monitoring implant position and integrity over time
  • Assessing changes in breast shape, size, or symmetry
  • Supporting informed, proactive decision-making about exchange or removal

Recommended monitoring:

For patients with silicone implants, periodic MRI is the most sensitive method for detecting silent rupture and is generally recommended at intervals following surgery, alongside routine clinical review. During your consultation, Dr Robert George will discuss the most appropriate monitoring schedule for your implant type and individual circumstances.

Signs that may warrant assessment:

While many implant changes are only detected through imaging, some signs warrant prompt clinical review, including:

  • A noticeable change in breast shape, size, or firmness
  • Pain, swelling, or asymmetry that develops without a clear cause
  • Visible rippling or palpable changes beneath the skin
  • Concerns following a known implant recall or product-specific advisory

Implant exchange:

Implants may be exchanged for a range of reasons, including a change in personal preference, capsular contracture, implant rupture, rippling, or simply wanting to update to a different size, shape, or implant type. Depending on your goals and the condition of your existing implants, exchange surgery may involve replacing implants alone, or may be combined with a breast lift to address changes in position or skin quality.

Your consultation:

Every implant monitoring or exchange consultation begins with a thorough assessment of your current implants, including a review of imaging where available, and a discussion of your goals. Dr George will explain your options clearly, including risks, expected recovery, and what to expect from surgery, so you can make a fully informed decision.

A personalised approach:

Whether you're due for routine monitoring or considering exchange, our clinical team, is here to support you throughout the process, ensuring your ongoing breast health and results are cared for with the same attention as your original procedure.
