SCREENING AND SURVEILLANCE
Medical screening aims to identify potential disease before symptoms develop, improving outcomes through early detection. BreastScreen Australia offers free mammographic screening to individuals aged 50 to 74. However, individualised screening is often required outside this program for those with higher risk factors, dense breast tissue, or a history of previous breast surgery.
Surveillance, by contrast, refers to the ongoing monitoring of someone who has previously had a breast condition or treatment. Following breast cancer, this is typically performed annually by the treating surgeon or oncologist. It's important that surveillance is carried out by a doctor who stays current with evolving clinical guidelines, ensuring your care reflects the latest evidence and best practice.
At LIFE X CLINICS, Dr Robert George provides both individualised screening and ongoing surveillance, guiding patients through each step with clear explanations and compassionate care.
What screening and surveillance involve:
Both screening and surveillance begin with a physical assessment, checking for lumps and other changes in the breast. This is typically followed by imaging, which may include:
- Mammography — standard imaging for routine screening and surveillance
- Ultrasound — used to further assess breast tissue and investigate specific areas of concern
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) — recommended in certain cases depending on risk factors such as genetics and breast density, and considered the most sensitive imaging modality for detecting silicone implant rupture, including silent rupture with no obvious symptoms
When further investigation is needed:
If a potential abnormality is identified during screening or surveillance, further investigation may be required, such as additional imaging or a biopsy to examine tissue samples. Dr George will guide you through every step of this process, explaining what to expect and ensuring you feel supported and informed throughout.
Your screening and surveillance plan:
Every patient's needs are different, shaped by factors including age, family history, genetics, breast density, and surgical history. Dr Robert George works with each patient to determine the most appropriate screening or surveillance schedule, supported by our clinical team, to help you stay on top of your breast health and navigate any issues that arise.
